In the late days of 1996, I was doing research on the Internet about heraldry. It seemed that everywhere I went, I was running into information about the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval history re-creation group -- who appeared to have a real love for heraldry.

As the days wore on, I was learning less and less about medieval heraldry and more and more about the SCA. Finally, I got in touch with a local group officer and asked if I could attend one of their events.

But, little did I know how all-encompassing this new hobby would become! While my two great loves are costuming and heraldry, but I've also learned a stunning array of other arts, such as embroidery, metal casting, jewellery-making, shoe-making, and medieval dancing!

f you enjoy medieval history, and don't mind getting dressed up in costume, I encourage you to learn more about the SCA. From there, you can quickly find a local branch and contact one of the officers to find out about any events going on in your area.

Each person in the Society takes on a persona of their own construct; and I am no different. I am known as Katherine Aylwyn de Chaliers, a mid-14th century noblewoman. I am a well-educated, widowed (at a very tender age) woman who enjoys living the good life. I miss my family at home in England dreadfully, but this new world has been very good to me.

I've been away from home for the past four years, first arriving in the Barony of Ramshaven in the beautiful land of Ealdormere, then making my way east to Seashire in the Barony of Ruantallan in the East Kingdom. Seashire reminds me very much of home -- it rains all the time here, too!

When I first arrived, I was befriended by a splendid young Scot who goes by the name Lord Andree macByrne. Being a strong and talented man, he fought for me in many tournaments in Ealdormere, much to my delight.

After several months, wanderlust set in, and I left for the Kingdom of the East. Here, I've made more friends than I could even attempt to name. The Dream is, indeed, alive in Ruantallan.
