Passage of a Hero

Come gather round, sit by my fire, hear a tale so dim.
Of a night so cold, a night so dark, yet honour would it win.
Our hero, he was strong, you see, like Zeus his mighty self.
His speed and mind were also grand, but honour was his wealth.

Through the depths of Hell he'd tread each day, no fear would he show.
Though the Spectre's face was always near, with Him he would not go.
For at his side, more oft than naught, a squire of endless faith.
His life he'd offer for their own, and yet he fought the Wraith.

And in his dusk, a young girl came, to learn of honour true.
Wide-eyed, naive, and full of hope, he'd say and she would do.
Each day and night and night and day they battled for the cause.
He filled her mind with knowledge olde; for him she would not pause.

Until one day, the winter's snow lay heavy on the green.
And past that day, no longer would things be as they had been.
Yes, Destiny would come at last, a day that some do fear.
But, come it does, some day, some month, some terrible great year.

They ran across the country swift, they covered all the land.
The fighting it was tough that day, but Fate was at his hand.
His blood was shed, it stained the ground, she wept for all to see.
His days had come unto an end, she knelt on bended knee.

His face shone bright with pride so clear, as Death sat by his side.
His moments left on earth were short, from this he could not hide.
"I've taught you all I can and now, I ask you pass this on".
"Yes, heed my words, and hold them dear, remember when I'm gone".

"Our Code, you see, it makes us strong, its fire keeps us warm".
"It feeds us fill when hunger strikes, it weathers out our storm".
"It lights our way like sunshine bright, it gathers in our heart".
"And when we hold it in our souls, we aren't alone when we're apart".

Her mentor, friend, and confidante lay still on solid stone.
This body once so strong and kind, now naught but flesh and bone.
Yet his words, his faith, his friendship good, his legacy so true.
Would be heard unto eternity, and she swore that she would do.
