Death upon the Mountainside

I sing you now the song of a man, a man of endless might
Who fought for honour and the Code and the darkness of the night
I sing you, too, of a woman brave, yet thinking was she not
Of how he saved her life, her light, from the monsters that they fought

Her comrade's body lay in blood; o'er the corpse, a hydra stood
She heard his cries and then she ran, as quickly as she could
Oh, she charged ahead without a thought, as she was want to do
And around a corner came the man; he'd heard the death cry, too

Exchanging smiles, their morale rose, together they would win
They forged ahead upon their quest, to retrieve their poor dead kin
A mountain rose up high above, it taunted them to come
She climbed up first to face her foe... yet, quickly she was numb

Surmount the cliff, he was right behind, he figured she was fine
They'd climb and climb and meet up top, and there they would combine
No need to plan, they said it all, in the smile that they shared
With the strength of two to take it down, no reason they be scared

And as he stumbled o'er a rock, a horror did he gaze
There she was, all blood and gore, fighting in her daze
Tears burned her cheeks, she closed her eyes, her mind no longer there
He saw her life was draining fast, and this he could not bare

He pushed her off and out the way, she stumbled blindly back
Her sword still swung in furied rage, till she slumped before the pack
Knees gave out, fell to the ground, the pack, they saw their prey
Despite his efforts, they closed around, she was dead if she would stay

"Forgive me, lass, I hold you dear, your life I'm sworn to keep"
He muttered as he fought the hoard, and took a breath so deep
He gave a shove, he gave a push, and watched her body fall
A trail of crimson stained the ground, yet safe she was from all

The pack had paid, for gaul they'd shown; their blood it mixed with her's
Which only served to magnify what within his dark path stirs
Down the path, he climbed to see, the lady who'd been downed
Her body limp, her face so pale, her lifeblood all around

Her hand in his, he said a prayer, like the prayers said of old
The gods would surely hear him now, yet, all he felt was cold
Her hand grasped tight, she held to life, her eyes they opened wide
He'd saved her life, he'd saved her light, she woke with endless pride

He held her tight, her smile it beamed, what loyalty was this
He bore her up, upon her feet, how her balance it did list
With shaky steps, they went to town, he made sure that she could fend
And turned around, made off again, to avenge their other friend
