Text:   COLIN 'THE COAL HAULER' MACDONALD - 78 - New Waterford - Colin MacDonald, 78, of 557 Thompson Street, New Waterford, passed away Monday, September 27, 2004 at the New Waterford Hospital. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John Malcolm and Mary MacDonald. Colin attended St. Agnes school in his early years and was a member of Mount Carmel Parish. He was known as being a talented piano player. Colin was employed in No. 12 Colliery as a coal hauler and then No. 16 until it's closure. He then worked in No. 18 Colliery and was given early retirement as an injured miner. Surviving are his wife, Christina "Tiny" MacDonald of New Waterford, sons Francis (Debbie)
MacDonald of Calgary, Alberta, John Malcolm (Lorraine) MacDonald of
Lloydminster, Alberta, stepchildren Lorne MacDonald of New Waterford,
Sandra (Paul) MacDonald, Roberta (Billy) White, both of Calgary, brother Jerome MacDonald of New Waterford, sisters Annie MacDonald, Cassie (Dennis) Pilon, Cathaerine Nemis, Cecilia (Sonny) Gottwald, all of New Waterford, Alma (Eugene) Ramey, Marina, Both of Ontario, five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Colin was predeceased by stepchildren Brian MacDonald and Marie Boutilier, brothers, John, Frank and Archie, sisters Rachael, Christina and Margaret as a child. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the
direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral mass will be held Friday October 1, 2004 at 11 am in Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Following the burial there will be a reception held in the Carmel Center, New Waterford. Donations in Colin's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Text:   Jim Quinn, 75, of Grand Narrows, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005. Born in Piper's Cove, he was the son of Mrs. Isabel Quinn of Piper's Cove and the late Bernard Quinn. Jim worked for the Department of Highways on the C. Monty MacMillan at Grand Narrows, retiring as captain in the early 90s. He then was employed by the Northside District School Board for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, the former Isabel Fraser; a daughter, Anne Marie, Toronto; a
son, James Gerard (Donna), Hornepayne, Ont.; two brothers, Dr. Brian, Piper's Cove, Michael Dan (Delores), Grand Rapids, Mich.; two sisters, Mary E. (Steve) Horyl, Piper's Cove, Mrs. Diane Ward, Sarnia, Ont.; and by his grandson, James R. Visitation for the late Mr. Quinn will take place at St. Barra's Church, Christmas Island, Sunday from 2-4 and 7- 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Barra's Church with Rev. Charles Donovan officiating. Interment in
St. Barra's Parish Cemetery, Christmas Island. Donations may be made to the Canadian Hear t a n d Stroke Foundation or St. Barra's Building Fund. Funeral arrangements under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Text:   - Scotchtown. Caroline Dupe, 39, 28 King Street, died Friday May 2, 1986 at the New Waterford Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of Salvatore DeGiobbi and the late Mary (Beaton) DeGiobbi. Besides her father, she is survived by her husband George Dupe, two sons, George Francis and Greg Louis, both at home and a daughter Wendy Anne also at home. She is also survived by six brothers, Anthony, Tommy, Michael, and Brian all of New Waterford, John Violande of Sydney and Raymond of Edmonton, Alberta, and by two sisters Rose of New Waterford and Shirley (Mrs. Albert Dupe) of New Waterford. The body rested at the V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street. The funeral took place on Monday with mass at 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with burial in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Text:   MacDONALD, Michael James - 87, longtime resident of Reserve Mines, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, in Glace Bay Health Care Corp. South Street. Michael was born in Dominion in 1909 to the late James and Margaret (McDonald) MacDonald. Michael served his community as a board member, union leader, firefighter, member of the legislative assembly and county council member. Educated at St. Joseph's School, Michael worked in the coal mines to help support his family due to the premature death of his father. During his years in the mine, he became president of local 4521 of the United Mine Workers of America, serving in that capacity from 1938-41. In 1941, Michael was seriously injured in a stone fall and left mining to work as a salesman for Lynch's Bakery, Sydney. While there, he formed a union and served and president of the local. A lifelong member of St. Joseph's Parish, Reserve Mines, he worked closely with Rev. Jimmy Tompkins, a social activist, and served as president of the parish of Holy Name Society from 1930-35. He was also active in the co-op and credit union movements; he was involved in the inception of the Reserve Mines Credit Union and served as a member of the board of directors and vice-president. Michael was a member of the Reserve Mines Volunteer Fire Department for over 60 years, and was a charter member of the organization in 1934, serving at one time as deputy chief and executive chief of the department from 1946-77. He was also a founding member of the Cape Breton Firefighters Fraternal Association and served as president from 1942-45. He retained lifelong interested in fire-fighting. In 1945, he was elected as the CCF candidate for the Cape Breton Centre, a seat he held in the legislative assembly for 18 consecutive years. He was leader of the CCF/NDP party in Nova Scotia from 1953-63, and from 1960-63, sat as dean of the house of assembly. He was an uncompromising advocate for social justice in the province who sponsored legislation in the Assembly and worked in legislative committees toward this end. He was a business agent for the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers from 1957 until his retirement in 1975. During this time, he was involved with the Cape Breton Labour Council and the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour. In retirement, he was honoured for service rendered by the Cape Breton Firefighters Fraternal Association, the Cape Breton Labour Council, the Nova Scotia Credit Union Movement, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and the Knights of Columbus, Glace Bay Council, of which he was a 4th degree member. Following his retirement as a union agent, Michael served as county councilor in the former district 18 on the Cape Breton County Council from 1974-76. He was also active in the Pensioners Club and again served on the board of the Reserve Mines Credit Union. Mr. MacDonald is survived by his wife, Mary K. (MacDonald); son, Brian and wife Valerie Bobyk, Sydney; daughter, Barbara, Economy. He is also survived by sister, Anne MacDonald, Medfield/Sharon, Mass. Michael was predeceased by sisters, Sarah, Sydney; Isabel Bainbridge, Cambridge, Mass.; Catherine Bradford, Boston, Mass.; brothers, Jack, Reserve Mines; Alex (former president, district 26 UMW), New Waterford; Donald (former president, district 18 UMW), Calgary. The remains of the late Michael MacDonald are resting at Curry's Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. Visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 6, at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Main Street, Reserve Mines, Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
