Caledonia Miner Is Killed Instantly
Glace Bay - Joseph Alexander Michalik, 26, was killed instantly
Wednesday afternoon when he fell under the rakes while going to his
work in Caledonia colliery.
Mr. Michalik's death marked the second fatal accident to occur at
Caledonia colliery since Friday when Kenny Jamieson was killed under a
fall while working near the unit.
A native of Glace Bay, Mr. Michalik worked in Caledonia mine for the
past 10 years. He as on his way into the mine for the night shift
about 2 p.m. when he slipped under the rakes and was severely crushed
about the chest and head. Death is believed to have been
instantaneous.
He resided at 8 Stanley Street and is survived by his wife the former
Annie Chermiski, a son, David and a daughter, Rose Ann, both at home.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Michalik reside at 10 Stanley St. and
other relatives are two brothers, Edward and Bernie at home and three
sisters, Cecelia and Carmel at home, and Frances in Toronto.
The victim was a member of Holy Cross parish. He was well known in the
community and enjoyed the high regard if all with whom he came in
contact. His traqgic death is widely mourned.
The remains are reposing at the home of his parents, 10 Stanley
Street. Funeral arrangements are incomplete

Text:   MICHALIK, David Joseph - 47, 5 Borden St. Ext., Glace Bay, died May 28, 1995, in Glace Bay Integrated Health Care South Street Facility. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of Anna (Charumski) (Michalik) Campbell, Glace Bay and the late Joseph A. Michalik. He was employed at Thompson and Sutherlands, Glace Bay and Island Distributors of Sydney until illness forced his retirement in 1982. He owned and operated Whispers Restaurant, and at the time of his death he operated Days Cash and Carry, Reserve Street, Glace Bay. He also enjoyed a term as town councillor in Ward 3, Glace Bay and was on various committees. He was an active member of the Y's Mens Club; spent many hours doing woodworking and handcrafts in his garage and enjoyed fishing. Surviving are his wife, the former Ann Hillier; daughter, Tammy, Glace Bay; son, Sandy, Glace Bay; a granddaughter; sister, Roseanna McPherson, Ontario; half-brother, Donald Campbell; several nieces and nephews. He was guardian to Gwen (Hillier) Porier and George Hillier, Glace Bay. He was predeceased by his stepfather, Fred Campbell; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Michalik; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Charumski; father-in-law and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hillier. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, both in Curry's Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Glace Bay. Burial in St. Ann's Cemetery, Glace Bay.

Text:   Large Number Attend Funeral
New Waterford, Feb. 13 - The largely attended funeral of the late Shirley Agnes Gillis, took place from the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Angus Gillis, Scotchtown on Wednesday morning. The Funeral Cortage left the residence on Queen Street and proceeded to St. Agnes church where services were conducted at 9:30 by Rev. E. J. D'Intmo ?? officiating at the graveside.
Pall bearers were Raymond Pastick, Wallace White, Alphonus Copen,
Melvin MacDougall and Johnnie Back, Jr. The late child was the five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Angus Gillis, Queen Street, Scotchtown, who passed away on Monday following a very brief illness. She is survived by her parents, one sister and two brothers, Ruby Marie, 7; Angus Bernard, 2; and Michael Wayne, 1.
The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved parents on the death of their beloved child. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of MacGillivray and Dunlop Funeral Homes.

Text:   Michael Ardelli, well-known retired steel company employee, died at the family residence after a lengthy killness. He was 65. Mr. Ardelli was born in Poland and came to Sydney in 1907. He was employed at the Blast Furnace Department for 42 years. The deceased was a devout member of St. Mary's Polish Church. He is
survived by ??????????????? sons and daughters; Peter, Victor, Michael and John in Hamilton; Charles at home; Mrs Charles Scott, Hamilton; Mrs. Ronald Bouchier, Montreal; Mrs. Elmer MacDonald, Sydney; Mrs. Steve Manley, Sydney; Minnie and Dorothy, at home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
