Inquiry Held Into Death Of John Matlock

Evidence of Five Witnesses Indecates Death Was Accidental

New Waterford, Nov 3 - Investigation of the fatal accident which cost the life of John Matlock, 33-year-old machine runner on No. 16 colliery, on Wednesday, Oct 20th, occupied the attention of Commissioner W. A. D. Gunn of Sydney, her today.
The official inquiry took place at the Town Hall at 4 p.m. with District Deputy Inspector Angus R MacDonald, representing the Provincial Government Manager of No 16 colliery James R. MacNeil, John A. Y. MacNeil, LL. B., of Sydney, and W. G. Ross, Sydney, representing the Company and Board Member Douglas MacDonald, James MacNeil, Rannie Wilton, Jr., and Timothy Chiasson representing the U. M. W. of A.
Five witnesser in all were heard and though no decision is given after these hearings and they are merely closed, all descrived it as purely accidental.
The first was J. MacEachern, who was working on the wall and came to where the injured man was when he heard someone crying to come and help him lift a stine. On arriving he found a large slab of stone laying over a cutting machine. The who had called him was John Deloupe. With help of others they lifted the piece of stone off the body. He thought the man was dead then.
In reply to the Inspector he stated he noticed that the place was fairly well timbered and that the stone was like a slip, thin on the outside and getting thicker as it went under the coal. Although he hadn't measured the distance he thought the distance would be about six to eight feet between timbers.
The manager of the mine, James ...... to be continued.
