Kentucky Virtual Library
Many of the American states maintain a virtual library for the citizens of their state.  These virtual libraries contain a myriad of digital sources, and often this information is customized for specific users: the adult education community, state university faculty, and K-12 students in various categories. The main interface provides access to digital collections relevant to the state, automated library catalogs available in the state, periodical databases for which the state has purchased licenses, and a virtual reference desk that includes e-mail reference service. The customized organization that is used at this site enables just-for-me learning for several groups of learners and just-in-time learning for others.  It supports both formal and informal learning.

The Virtual School Library (Sackville High School)
This virtual library was originally developed as an example of a virtual library useful for high school students for a course that I was teaching.  I have adapted it for use by the students of this 10-12 high school. It features sites that are useful for the formal curriculum of the school.  There is a virtual reference desk, which contains links to resources that are used frequently by high school students. A popular part of this reference site is How to write citations . Another popular area of this virtual library is How to write resumes.  This virtual library has been tailored to meet the learning needs of a specific community of learners. Grade ten students receive an orientation to this site, as well as other instructional parts of the school's Web site, when they begin their school career at this school. This virtual library has a lot of visitors and is always open.
