The word Papillon is french for butterfly. It is pronounced PAP-EE-ON. The Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club describe the Papillon as a small, friendly, elegant Toy dog of fine-boned structure, light, dainty and of lively action: distinguished form other breeds by its beautiful butterfly-like ears.
The breed standard goes on to say that the height of the Papillons should be between 8 and 11 inches(though you can get smaller and larger papillons). They are primarily white dogs with any other color covering from the back of the ears over the front and extending around the eyes. The Papillon will usually have a white blaze between the eyes. The large ears and coloration give the illusion of butterfly wings.
Papillons are very adaptive. They will comfortably live anywhere you do. They love country walks but are content to live in the city. They handle winter well and don't need to be dressed for the cold. They are very bright and do well in obedience and agility.
