About Me

George Bedwin Hello, my name is George Albert Bedwin. I live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. In earlier days, Halifax and Dartmouth were known as the Twin Cities. In the late 1990's, Halifax, Dartmouth, and the surrounding areas were amalgamated into what is today called the Regional Municipality of Halifax. For those that are interested, I will bore you with a few details of my life's history.

Like many young lads of my day, I started my working career by delivering newspapers, then as an older youth, I worked for two summers for Standard Paving. With Allen Construction for one summer, I worked on the excavation for the Mother Seton House at the Mount Saint Vincent Academy.

I attended six different schools, went to the old Trade School by the Halifax Forum, where I studied cooking. I worked at the Keltic Lodge in Cape Breton as an assistant pastry chef. From there I went to work for J. P. Porter as a cook on their tug called the Margaret Porter.George Bedwin - 1956

In 1955 and 1956, I was attending Kings College School in Windsor, Nova Scotia. I was the photographer of the yearbook, the Windsorian, and attended many events in that capacity. At that time I had a goal to be a United Church Clergyman, but my career choice changed in later life. In the photo at left I was 17 years of age.

On September 20 1957, I entered employment with Colwell Bros., the English clothing store for men. While there, I met a number of interesting and famous people, among them, the Prime Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson. I also met the Premier of Newfoundland at that time, Joseph Smallwood, and some other well known people. After leaving Colwell Bros., I worked for Tip Top Tailor's for about 3 months. In November 1986, I went to work at the Nova Scotia Hospital, where I was employed as an orderly on the wards for two and one-half years; for the other 27 1/2 years I spent working as laundry escort, from which I retired on April 27 1994.

I also belonged to the Canadian Army Militia, serving in the medical corps as a medic for almost 22 years. I received the Cd Medal for 12 years service, I retired in 1980 with the rank of sergeant. My old kahki uniform was placed on display at the Canadian Army section at the Citadel Hill Museum in Halifax.

I also worked at the old Mayfair Theatre in Dartmouth, which was lost to a fire. I worked at the Vogue Theatre in Halifax, and at Famous Player Theatre in Penhorn Mall.

Since my retirement, I have discovered the intreaging world of computers. I enjoy learning new programs and I have been able to learn more about the hardware side of computers. Computers are fast becoming an accepted everyday appliance, and I am now comfortable with them. I enjoy reading about historical subjects, science fiction, and detective works. In addition to these hobbies, friends and acquaintences have introduced me to the interesting world of genealogy, and I have been investigating my family history. As a result of this, Gabby's Genealogy Digs has come to be.
