December 2009

Christmas Cheer Kettles

A big “thank you” to all who have volunteered to stand at a kettle and thank those who give to the Christmas Cheer Kettles.  Not only is this a major fund raiser for The Salvation Army but it is a wonderful ministry to touch other lives with God’s love.  If you do nothing more than smile and say thank you, when it is done for God, it will be rewarded.

The need for Christmas help is so much greater this year.  There is some doubt whether The Salvation Army will be able to provide Christmas help to all who need it this year.  In order to help all who are seeking help, more funds are needed.  Therefore, more volunteers are needed to help man the Christmas Cheer Kettles.  If you can give a couple extra hours or know of someone who would be willing to volunteer, please see Captain Sean.

Community Care Ministries

On December 6th at 2:00 we will be distributing gifts to the residents at the Oakwood Terrace.  Following the distribution of gifts, we will have our monthly worship service with the residents and families.  All are welcomed to join us.

On December 20th at 2:00 we will be having a service with the residents at the Oceanview Manor.  Following the service we will distribute gifts to the residents on each floor.  Again all are welcomed to join with us as we go from ward to ward singing Christmas carols and bringing joy to those who are in institutions.

Sundays in December

On Sunday, December 6, Major Morris Vincent, Area Commander will be our guest speaker.  On Sunday, December 13th Bob and Connie have offered to lead and speak at our morning service.  Please be in prayer for these folk as they prepare to lead us into God’s presence.

First Place 4 Health

Due to the fact that all of us will be involved in the Christmas Kettle Campaign, weight in will be done at the quarters.  Please call ahead to verify that Major Marilyn is at home.

125th Anniversary

In 2010 Dartmouth Community Church will celebrate 125 years of service in this community.  Several events have been planned.  It is the hope of the Anniversary Committee to invite past members to these events.  If you have names and addresses of anybody who at one time or another has been a member of our corps, we would appreciate receiving this information so that a newsletter can be sent to them inviting them to join with us in celebrating God’s blessing over the years.

Precious Moments

Quarter Cards

On December 7th at 10:30 the Moms and Tots involved in Precious Moments will be having a Christmas Party.   This is by invitation only.

We are asking all families to take a quarter cards and return the filled card on December 20th.  These cards will be received during the morning service.

Food Bank

Angel Tree of Memories

The food bank is closed until January 7th.  If you know of anyone who needs help this Christmas with a food hamper or toys for children, please encourage them to call the Christmas Help Line # 422-0285.

A big thank you to all who have helped out at the food bank during this past year.  We can’t do it without you!

As in previous years we will be having an angel tree of memories.  If you would like to place an angel on the tree in memory of a loved one, please complete the form and return it to Major Marilyn before December 20th.  The names of all those being remember will be read at the Candlelight Service.

Candlelight Service

Our Candlelight Service will be held on December 20th at 6:00 p.m.  Babysitting services will be offered in the kitchen to families coming with young children.  We invite all our families to come and join us for this beautiful service.

Women’s Christmas Party

Women’s Christmas Party will be held on December 13th at 6:00 p.m. at Smitty’s Restaurant at 107 Main Street.  This is for all the women of the corps (not just Home League Members.)  If you are interested in attending, we ask that you sign the sheet posted on bulletin board and bring a gift priced at $15.

Distribution of Christmas Hampers

On December 15th and 16th from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. hampers will be distributed to families in Dartmouth and surrounding areas.  Volunteers are needed.  If you know of any one who would be willing to come out and help in this worthwhile endeavor, please see Major Marilyn.  All volunteers are asked to wear warm clothing and a Santa hat.

Merry Christmas

No warm, downy pillow His sweet head pressed

No soft garments His fair form dressed;

He lay in a manger, this Heavenly Stranger,

The precious Lord Jesus, the wonderful Child.

No jubilant clang of rejoicing bell

The glorious news to the world did tell;

But angels from glory sang sweetly the story

Of Bethlehem’s Stranger, the Saviour of men.

Thou Heavenly Stranger, so gentle and mild,

Though born in a manger, the Father’s own Child,

We worship before Thee and praise and adore Thee,

And sing the glad story again and again.

Merry Christmas

From Captain Sean and Major Marilyn Furey

 David, Andrew and Maureen

The Perfect Gift was given to us over two thousand years ago.  It didn’t come wrapped in pretty paper and bows and ribbons.  The shepherds found this gift in a feeding trough, surrounded by animals and the smells of livestock.  God gave us His best, His only Son, so that we could have His salvation.

This Christmas season we pray that you will experience His love and peace.  That is the greatest gift that you can ever receive. As you go out and around, lighten the load of weary shoppers and give them a smile.  Show the world the joy that comes in serving Christ.
