Sidney spent two, 4-year periods in Saskatchewan. The first time he spent working with his wife's cousin the Leslies (Casper/Jasper, David and Archibauld). His wife died after the birth of their second child, Hazel. The first year he was in Saskatchewen, he experienced the cyclone of 1912 that distroyed much of Regina. The family had a root celler and David pushed his wife and workers down into the celler. When the storm was over the house was gone but the barn survived. They built a one-room sod house to get them through the winter. Sidney came back to NS when his daughter was four years old, and she didn't know who he was. It was unsure whether he went directly back out to Saskatchewan for a second term at this point, or that trip had been his second visit. I am assuming that he returned to Saskatchewan in approximately 1916 and came back to NS in 1919 and at this point married his wife's sister, Florence. On the other trip he worked with a Scottish family (probably Thomas A. McCullough and wife). Mr. McCullough (he called Mr. McCall) was known as a wonderful old guy, but his wife was not well liked. She would say that there were two kinds of people "Scots and those that liked to be." It was not known if they had any children. Working in Saskatchewan enabled Sidney to earn enough money to purchase his property in East Lawrencetown. The cyclone had terrified him of wind and he is remembered as being quite concerned during wind storms in Nova Scotia.
