Star Trek Over?
It was announced today that Playmates will be canceling its Star Trek action figure line. I think that just about everyone expected this, it was just a matter of time. It has to be the largest universe ever created in the form of action figures next to the Marvel Universe. For that I commend Playmates. Here in Canada, at least in my part, we haven't seen any action figures from Star trek since voyager entered its second season.

I don't think this will be the last of Star Trek figure, but I do think that it is time for a change. I certainly hope that the license goes to another company one that can do the very best life like people. Like McFarlane perhaps. The whole franchise needs a face lift and I think that includes revamping its merchandise as well

Sonic Adventure Toys
**UPDATE**
Grand Toys International has acquired the Canadian distribution rights for certain Sonic products from Toy Island Manufacturing. Toy Island got the rights from Sega to produce and distribute Sonic toys and plush dolls throughout North America.

The deal allows Grand Toys the rights to distribute whatever Sonic toys Toy Island makes. Some of the stuff we can expect from these guys include 5.5" action figures, which will include Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Big the Cat, and Dr. Robotnik. The Sonic The Hedgehog toy line will also include vehicles and playsets, wind up vehicles, bendable figures, plush toys, electronic plush toys, remote control figures and vehicles, paper and stationery products, spring and summer toys as well as junior sporting goods. Product is currently expected to be available for shipment at various "roll-out" dates throughout the year 2000.

Steve Altro, Chairman of Grand Toys commented, "We are excited to add Sonic The Hedgehog to our diverse portfolio of licensed products. The excitement surrounding the recent launch of the Sega Dreamcast system should only add to the appeal of characters like Sonic, which we believe can transcend the video game market into popular toys. The addition of Sonic further demonstrates our commitment to pursue strong and exciting new product distribution licenses, from sources all over the world."

Resuarus announced yet another video game license. They have acquired the rights to make toys of the new Sega Dreamcast Mascot Sonic.

The toy line includes:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Knuckles
  • Tails

If this line does well then there may be more of Sonics pals on the way. A Dr Robotnik would be pretty cool. Also there will be some larger Sonic figures released later this year from TOY ISLAND. No word on what they will be or how large.

Amazon.Com Open's Toy E-Tail Site
Amazon.com's toy web-site has been up for a few days now. The internet juggernaut has joined the toy retail sector on the net. This will join three other major toy retailers on the net including the recently formed Toys'R'Us.com.

These are the other three major toy internet retailers.

Why, you may ask, is the opening of Amazon.com's toy site so important? And I would say, because it is the only one out of the four as of July 21st /99 that ships anything to Canada. That's right, Toys 'R' Us, EToys and KBKids don't service international addresses. Makes you think.

Interested In Helping Out?
Canadian SCTV greats Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas are now going to be immortalized in plastic by Mcfarlane Toys. 'Finally' the two famous characters from Strange Brew and SCTV will be made into figures. You will be able to reenact famous scenes from the movie such as: putting out a fire by urinating on it. Or reenact such famous commercials such as the one for speedy muffler.

The figures will be made to coincide with their new movie called Home Brew which begins filming in July, for a Spring 2000 release.

****Update****
At the last moment it appears that the funding on the movie has suddenly dropped out. The movie is now delayed indefinitely. Time will tell what that means for the Bob and Doug action figures...

Interested In Helping Out?
If anyone is interested in submitting any articles for review and then potentially have them posted on this site, please do. I recommend talking to me before you write an article. Please bear in mind though that this is a Canadian toy collecting site, and therefore should have that represented in some way in the article.

I Encourage people to come up with their own ideas, but here are some suggestions:

  1. Your opinions on collecting toys in Canada
  2. An American Perspective on the Canadian toy industry.
  3. Reviews of Action Figures (Honestly I would prefer you like the subject of the toy that you are reviewing. In other words if you are reviewing Star Trek toys and you hate them, don't review them if you also don't like Star Trek.)

Please Contact me if you are interested. Submitted material is not the property of Adam Perry, but I may edit articles for space or wording. Also there is no payment for articles, but a link to your web-site and your name will be printed. Submit to aperry@accesswave.ca
